The fast developments in medicine during the past decades open up new ethical scenarios which are of general interest for all members of society. As it was recognized by the European Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine (Oviedo, 1997), there is a need for promoting a public debate on the questions posed by the application of biology and medicine, a dialogue in which the rights and responsibilities of the citizens are openly discussed bearing in mind the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 10 December 1948, the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of 4 November 1950, the Convention on the Rights of the Child of 20 November 1989, and other social contracts and agreements in which the human being -both as an individual and as a member of the human species- is treated with respect and dignity.
