Beowulf

J.R.R. TOLKIEN

Una obra imprescindible para los fans de Tolkien.

Tolkien tradujo del inglés antiguo este poema unos diez años antes de escribirEl Hobbit. Beowulf contiene elementos que después Tolkien usaría en sus obras de la Tierra Media, como el dragón, que presagia al Smaug de El Hobbit.

La obra contiene apuntes donde se hace patente el sentido de la inmediatez y claridad de su visión: es como si entrara en el pasado imaginado y se irguiera junto a Beowulf y sus hombres cuando sacuden sus cotas de malla al asegurar su nave en la playa de la costa de Dinamarca; escuchara la creciente cólera de Beowulf por las provocaciones de Unferth; o mirara con asombro la terrible mano de Grendel colgada del techo de Heorot.

También incluye un extenso comentario de Christopher Tolkien sobre las notas de las conferencias que dio su padre sobre el poema Sellic Spell, un «cuento maravilloso» escrito por Tolkien en el que se sugiere cómo podría haber sido un cuento popular sobre Beowulf sin conexión con las «leyendas históricas» de los reinos del Norte.

Para celebrar el sesenta aniversario de esta obra clave de la literatura universal, Minotauro presenta un estuche de lujo que contiene los tres volúmenes de El Señor de los Anillos con las sobrecubiertas que diseñó Tolkien para la primera edición, y el volumen El Señor de los Anillos: Guía de lectura, en el que los expertos en Tolkien, Wayne G. Hammond y Christina Scull, analizan la obra capítulo a capítulo a través de reflexiones acerca de su evolución, estructura y significado.

Este impresionante volumen también contiene una breve historia de El Señor de los Anillos, un listado de los errores e inconsistencias corregidos en esta edición y la Nomenclatura o guía de nombres que Tolkien puso a disposición de los traductores y que había permanecido inédita en castellano hasta la fecha.
