The aim of Art of Diversity Press is to give voice to contemporary lyrical poetry, and cultural studies, to undertake the research on how we can create an identity in our liminal globalised society, and how it can serve as the basis for assessing our current situation as a multicultural society.

How can identity emerge within the context of a globalised and multicultural society which is in a continuous clash and liminal tension?

Literature in general, and lyrical poetry in particular, understood in its psychological aspect (in which pertains to its ability to communicate emotions) as a tool for the generation of identity, is proposed as a means to represent the liminality of our plural society and to conform new identities which could cover the present cultural diversity.

The framework is determined by English language, as koiné and vehicle for global communication, providing a unique environment to explore and develop this process of dismemberment and creation so unique to lyrical poetry.

Authors such as Maya Angelou, Benjamin Zephaniah, Eavan Boland, P.K. Page, Dorothy Livesay, Merle Collins, Kendel Hippolyte, Arnold H. Itwaru, Grace Nichols, Victor Questel, Li-Young Lee, Lorna Dee Cervantes, Rita Dove, Joy Harjo, Jorie Graham, Adrienne Rich, Paul Maldoon, etc. put us into contact with the different transcultural discourses (in this case with contemporary lyrical poetry in English language) expressing and pointing towards what could be called the art of diversity. A diversity not only understood in a Post-Colonial sense of the vindication of a human community to the right of existence beyond the historically oppressive and dominant culture, and which finally is recognised within a minority niche as a “culture” by the very same imperialistic nation; but a diversity in the sense of a global multiculturality that cannot continue looking towards the past of nationalisms (or cannons) because their so much protected borderlines have been blurred.

This globalisation, towards which we gravitate, forces a state of clash, of desequilibrium, of a dismemberment and of a social liminality which makes it quite difficult to form stable identities that may provide us with some sense in life.

In this respect, “marginal” and/or “liminal” literature (lyrical poetry in this case), precisely because it finds itself ignored at the threshold, or because it functions as a borderline for the meeting between two or more worlds, acquires a paramount significance due to its ability for the creation of a type of discourse which, because of its quality of exclusion and instability, presents itself as a constructive possibility for a global identity able to contain and hold its very own diversity and multiplicity.

In order for this project to develop, when the selected contemporary lyrical poet may not write directly in English language, his/her work will be published in translation, respecting the source language by producing a bilingual edition.

Beowulf

J.R.R. TOLKIEN
